5 Must-Visit Places in Lund, Sweden
Lund is a small town in the south of Sweden. A town that houses a renowned university and a rich history stretching back over a thousand years.
In this article, I want to share some of my favorite places in this medieval town that are worth visiting.
The University Library
This enormous brick building from 1907, created by the Swedish architect Alfred Hellerström, is one of the 26 libraries at Lund University. It’s considered one of the special libraries and holds historically important collections.
The building is located in a beautiful park with the hospital, the university, and the Museum of Sketches for Public Art (Skissernas Museum) as close neighbors. The Museum of Sketches is, in itself, a great place to visit if you are interested in art.
The facade of the University Library has many intricate details when looking closely. I like to visit the park in different seasons. In the spring, the park is filled with a sea of blue flowers. In autumn, the leaves covering the facade turn into colorful reds and yellows, creating an almost magical scene.
Universitetsplatsen
Universitetsplatsen is a combination of a park and a square in the heart of Lund. It features several historic buildings, where the University Building (Universitetshuset) is the most prominent one. This creamy white building from the late 1800s makes a perfect backdrop to this beautiful place. The park is also surrounded by the King’s house (Kungahuset) and Palaestra et Odeum. In the middle of the park is a huge fountain circled by freshly planted flowers for each season.
Kulturkvadranten
This area is known for its townhouses, cobblestoned streets, roses, and hollyhocks. To find this area, look for the streets Adelgatan, Hjortgatan, and Stora Sigridsgatan. Those streets are best experienced on foot on warm summer evenings.
Kulturen
Kulturen is an open-air museum with a large collection of buildings from different times that have been moved to Lund so that we can experience them. It is possible to enter all of them, and some also have quite extensive exhibitions on different themes.
Domkyrkan och Domkyrkoplatsen
Lund Cathedral is the sight in Lund — the crown jewel. This massive church stands proud in the middle of the city. On the south side, you’ll find a big open square with benches along the cathedral wall, a perfect spot to enjoy a coffee and the sunlight. On the north side, the big park Lundagård gives good shade.
The cathedral is free to visit, so don’t hesitate to go inside if you have the opportunity. It features a crypt, grand interior, and the astronomical clock Horologium Mirabile Lundense built in 1423–1425.
